In today’s internet infrastructure a massive quantities of people to gather in virtual environments, like when more than 12.3 million players tuned in for a VR concert in Fortnite featuring Travis Scott. Facebook changed its name to Meta and it was one of the biggest announcements the company made, was its expansion into the Metaverse.
A metaverse is a network with 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection. In futurism and science fiction, the term is often described as a hypothetical iteration of the Internet, a universal virtual world that is facilitated by the use of virtual and augmented reality headsets. Metaverse is a lines between the virtual world and reality have become blurred beyond recognition.
However, most of the people are not even aware of what it actually is and whether it is useful. If you’re confused about exactly what the Metaverse is, I am here to shed some virtual light on it.
The Metaverse is a concept of an online, 3D universe virtual space connecting users in all aspects of their lives. It would connect the multiple platforms, similar to the internet containing the different websites that are accessible through a single browser. The metaverse allow users to work, meet, game, and socialize together in these 3D spaces.
The metaverse concept has actually been around for a long time now and The word Metaverse was first used in the 1992 science-fiction novel “Snow Crash” by Neal Stephenson. The character’s in the novel donned avatars and interacted with each other in a virtual version of the world. In Second Life (released in 2003), for example: users can customize the realistic avatars, meet with other players, create virtual items, own virtual property, and exchange goods and services. However, while the idea of metaverse was once a fiction, now looks like it could be a reality in the future.
The Metaverse is a technology that help to create an entire digital universe like our real one. This universe include a wide variety of different worlds often also called virtual environments. People can easily join on Metaverse with the help of different technologies and interact with each other. However, instead of a user being there will be a person, they create an avatar which is their representation in the Metaverse.
Metaverse include a virtual reality—characterization by persistent virtual worlds that continue to exist even you’re not playing—as well as augmented reality that combines the aspects of the digital and physical worlds. However, it doesn’t require these spaces, exclusively accessed via VR or AR. A virtual world that can be accessed through PCs, game consoles, and even phones, could be metaverse.
It can built and translates to a digital economy, where users can create, buy, and sell goods. And, in the more idealistic visions of metaverse allow you to take virtual items like clothes or cars from one platform to another.
Unity’s Furioos is one of the prime example of streaming fully the interactive real-time 3D environments where the heavy lift of rendering the environments is handled by their automatically scaling GPU server infrastructure. The metaverse will be an ubiquitous computing experience where the users can leverage the traditional devices like computers and mobile devices and also enhancing the experience with emerging immersive AR and VR wearables.
On the other hand, just like Google, it builds parts of the internet—from physical data centers to security layers—it’s similarly the Fortnite creator Epic Games is building parts of the metaverse. And it isn’t the only company doing all thsese things. Some of the work will be done by tech giants like Microsoft and Facebook recently rebranded to Meta to reflect this work. Many other assorted companies like Nvidia, Unity, Roblox, and even Snap—are all working on building the infrastructure that might become the Metaverse. Everyone using the hardware to render the realistic virtual environments and avatars in 3D. Meta owns the leading producer of virtual reality headsets named as Oculus. Microsoft has been supporting the various enterprise use cases with its own HoloLens mixed reality smart glasses. HTC, Pico, MagicLeap, and other manufacturers are rapidly advancing the various models of hardware platforms. While the cascade technology architectures are shifting various computational loads across back-end server infrastructures to edge the devices.
You might be confused about the Metaverse’s history, It’s an easy to think Meta is the company that created the Metaverse, that is not the case. The term Metaverse is a term that was coined a long years ago even before the launch of Facebook which was in 2004.
On the other hand is a rebranding move by Facebook Team that changed the parent company’s name in late 2021. Even before the name change, Facebook had already started the investing in immersive technologies like virtual reality. This was done to pushing the idea of a digital world. According to the company, the name change signifies the vision of the company to bring Metaverse to life and the name change is a show of commitment to that future.’
Facebook Meta include fake houses you can invite all your friends to hang out in while, Microsoft creates virtual meeting rooms to train new hires or chat with your remote coworkers.
Metaverse become reality because many large technology companies are betting that it will be as big—if not bigger—than the internet is today. While nobody would own the metaverse itself, just like nobody owns the internet today. But there will certainly be many important players in the space, and companies like Meta, Microsoft, Unity, Epic Games, Roblox, and others want to be among them.
